First of all, what is digitizing? Digitizing, or Punching, is the process of converting artwork into a digital code that can be read by today's advanced embroidery machines. This digital code provides the instructions to the embroidery machine's operating system which, in turn, tells the embroidery machine's frame how to sew the design.
The word Punching actually comes from the traditional jacquard embroidery machines. The instructions that tell the machine's frame how to move and sew the embroidered design came from a tape punched with holes.
Digitizing, or Punching, is the process of converting your artwork design into a digital embroidery pattern that can be read by the embroidering machines. A skillful digitizing artist uses embroidery digitizing software to interpret your particular artwork design - from either vector format artwork or scanned artwork (.bmp, .tiff) - to a digital embroidery pattern.
Below are two examples of digitizing and embroidery based on the same artwork. One is ours and one was done by someone else. Can you guess which is which? We're very proud of OUR embroidery (on the left). Beware of lowball quotes for digitizing and embroidery. As in most things, you get what you pay for.
Digitizing is both a technical and a creative process. It's much more
than most people might imagine - a lot of people think their design will just be
'scanned'. While the digitizer may begin with a scan or a graphic file, he
has to tell the embroidery machine where to put each stitch, and what order to
sew your design - including where to stop, trim the threads, and switch to a
different color. Poor digitization can lead to a poor-looking design (as the one on the right), or
one that is very hard to sew. We're sure you'll be very pleased with the
results.
Once you digitize your design, it's yours to use at no cost - forever.
Cost
The cost of taking your original design and 'digitizing' it into an
embroidery machine-readable format will be a
one-time fee. The actual price will depend on the size and complexity of
your design. Send us an email to logos@sewkool.com
with your logo attached in a .bmp, .eps, .jpg, .tif, .gif, or .pdf file format and we'll give
you a free no-obligation quote. Please tell us what size you want the
logo to be, and what you want to embroider it on. If you accept the quote and authorize
us to go ahead, we'll proceed
with having your logo digitized. We'll have it completed by the next business day. Then, we'll e-mail you a
digital photo of a "sewout" of your logo on fabric for
your approval.

In fact, a (soon-to-be) new customer brought us the logo on the right that he had paid to have digitized and embroidered on a jacket. He was not happy. After we digitized his logo and embroidered it, he became a loyal customer.
